If you’ve never made your own salad dressing at home before, you are missing out! This 5 minute Poppy Seed Salad Dressing Recipe is a great place to start. Not only is it an easy recipe to make, but the results are so delicious and more versatile!

I’ll be honest—salads, for me, are really just an excuse for the dressing and toppings. I start with the best of intentions, but somewhere between the cheese, croutons, and handful of craisins, things take a turn. At some point, I’m not even sure it counts as a vegetable anymore.

How do I keep things in check? I make my own dressing. It takes five minutes, uses simple ingredients I already have, and the best part—you’re totally in control. Add as much of the good stuff you want and none of the weird stuff. And bonus: it’s way cheaper than buying bottled dressing every week.

This creamy poppy seed dressing checks all the boxes: just the right mix of tangy and sweet, perfectly pourable, and tastes great on everything from a leafy green Strawberry Feta Salad to a hearty, chunky Grilled Chicken Cobb Salad.

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Poppyseed Dressing

  • Delicious – It’s the perfect mix of creamy and sweet – great for getting picky eaters to eat their vegetables.
  • Simple – No fancy ingredients here! Just mayo, vinegar, sugar, and poppy seeds. And all the ingredients are customizable!
  • Quick – Just whisk it together in a bowl – no blender needed! Ready in 5 minutes and way better than store-bought.

Poppy Seed Dressing Ingredients

This simple recipe uses easily found ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your kitchen pantry!

Bowls with mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, and seasonings on a marble surface next to a striped cloth.
  • Mayonnaise – Use low-fat mayo or Greek yogurt for a healthier version.
  • Apple cider vinegar– This gives the dressing that necessary tanginess. Swap in unseasoned rice vinegar, white wine vinegar, or red wine vinegar if you don’t have apple cider vinegar on hand.
  • Granulated sugar– I use plain white sugar, but feel free to use raw sugar or honey for a healthier option.
  • Poppy seeds – these can be found in the spice section or baking aisle
  • Coarse Kosher salt and Ground black pepper

How to Make Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing

This creamy poppyseed dressing only requires two steps and a handful of minutes to make! It makes about 1 1/4 cups of dressing, and you can use it for several salads!

Step 1 – Add all the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk to combine the mixture well.

Step 2 – Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks!

Variations

  • You can make an orange or lemon poppy seed dressing by using orange or lemon juice instead of vinegar, and adding in the zest of the fruit.
  • Mix a little dijon mustard into the ingredients for extra zing!
  • Add a 1/2 teaspoon of onion or garlic powder for extra flavor.
  • For a Vegan poppy seed dressing, swap the mayo for a plant-based mayo, and use vegan friendly sugar or agave.
  • For healthier mayo options, use good-quality mayos without preservatives. If you’re not a fan of canola oil based mayo, olive oil or avocado oil varieties taste amazing! If you want a dressing that is in higher protein with more nutritional value, use Greek yogurt in the place of some or all the mayo in this recipe.

How to Use Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing

I’ve included a few of my favorite salads. But there are a variety of ways to use this creamy dressing beyond just salads.

Storage Instructions

Store salad dressing in an airtight container or mason jar with a tight fitting lid. Keep it in the back of the fridge where it’s coldest. Stored properly, leftover dressing will be good for up to 2 weeks

You may need to shake or stir the jar to blend the ingredients together if there is any separation.
