This recipe is completely made from scratch (except for the Oreos and pretzels). I use a version my favorite chewy chocolate chip cookie base and an adaptation of my fudgy brownie bites to make these homemade brownies extra easy.

But if you’re short on time you can totally adapt these brownies with premade cookie dough and your favorite boxed brownie mix!

Why are they called “Slutty Brownies”?

The original recipe for these brownies was respectably named “Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie Oreo Brownies” and was created by another food blogger–Amanda from “Kevin and Amanda”. However, another publication posted the recipe on their site and rebranded the recipe under the name “Slutty Brownies”. The scandalous name made the recipe go viral, and from there the name stuck.

BROWNIE. DRAMA.

I’m not surprised that these beauties are causing such a ruckus. These are the best brownies to reach for when you want your good behavior to slip a little. But no matter what you want to call these, we can thank Amanda for it and we can all agree to call them DELICIOUS.

Full ingredient amounts and step-by-step instructions can be found on the recipe card at the bottom of the post!

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350º.
  2. Prepare a 9×9″ square baking pan by lining it with two sheets of parchment paper, criss crossing. Allow the paper to hang over the sides for easy removal. Spray with cooking spray and set aside.

Step 1: Make the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

  1. Add the brown sugar and granulated sugar to a medium sized bowl and add the melted butter. Whisk until well combined.
  2. Add in the egg and the vanilla and mix until fully incorporated.
  3. Stir in the dry ingredients and mix until almost fully combined, but streaks of flour are still showing.
  4. Add the chocolate chips and stir gently until the batter is just mixed and no streaks of flour remain.
  5. Pour into the prepared pan and smooth out into an even layer with a spoon or your hands.
  6. Next, add the Oreos in a single layer on top of the cookie dough.

Step 2: Make the Brownie Layer:

  1. Add the chocolate chips and the butter to a heatproof bowl. Set the bowl over a small saucepan of barely simmering water–not boiling!
  2. Melt the chocolate chips and butter slowly, stirring frequently until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.
  3. Remove the chocolate mixture from the heat and whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Set aside.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
  5. Add a couple of spoonfuls of the warm chocolate mixture to the egg and sugar mixture and whisk to temper the eggs.
  6. Pour the remaining chocolate into the egg mixture and whisk until well combined.
  7. Add the all purpose flour and stir with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until just mixed.
  8. Pour the brownie batter over the cookie dough base and layer of Oreos. Use a rubber spatula or a spoon to spread the brownie batter out evenly. Make sure the layer of Oreo cookies is completely covered.

Step 3: Bake The Brownies:

  1. If adding the pretzels, add pretzels to the brownie batter layer in even rows.
  2. Bake at 350º for 35-40 minutes until the toothpick test comes out with fudgy moist crumbs.
  3. Allow the brownies to cool for at least two hours and cut them into small squares.

Storage

When stored in an airtight container at room temperature, these brownies will keep for 3-4 days.

You can even keep them in the fridge if you’d like–and you know I love a chilled brownie.

FYI-if you’re using the pretzels on top, the brownies are best consumed the same day they’re baked, to maintain the pretzels’ crunch. After a day or two, the pretzels start to soften.

Pro Tips:

  • Use a 9×9″ baking dish! I really mean it. I tried baking these brownies in an 8×8″ pan and the brownies don’t bake. You can get an inexpensive 9×9″ pan or use a foil pan if this isn’t a tool you want in your kitchen forever!
  • Make sure to line the bottom of the pan with tin foil or parchment paper. Allow the foil to hang over the sides of the pan for easy removal.
  • Allow the brownies to cool completely before cutting! There’s a lot going on in these guys, they need time to set up.
  • If you wanted to make the cookie dough layer even sweeter, try using white chocolate chip cookie dough instead of traditional chocolate chip cookie dough.

Substitutions

  • Use a brownie mix: Pick your favorite fudgy brand! Since we’re only baking these in a 9×9″ pan, you might not use all the batter. Just make sure there’s enough brownie batter to completely cover the top of the Oreos, without filling the pan to the brim.
  • Refrigerated cookie dough will make your life easier: You want to use enough cookie dough that make approximately 12 cookies (if you were scooping by 2 tablespoon fulls)
  • Pretzels: You can omit the pretzels and sprinkle some flaky sea salt on top after baking.

Note: Because mixes and premade doughs are all different, you may need to adjust the baking time. Use the toothpick test to determine doneness. A toothpick inserted into the center of the brownies should come out with fudgy moist crumbs attached.

FAQs

What’s In Slutty Brownies?

These bars are layered with chocolate chip cookie dough, Oreos, and chocolate brownie batter.

Does the order of the layers matter?

Yes, the layer order for these brownies is important.
The chocolate chip cookie dough should be the bottom layer since it’s denser than the brownie batter. It will provide the overall structure of the brownie/bar.
The brownie batter is more fluid and typically takes longer to bake than chocolate chip cookie dough. Layering the brownie batter on top will ensure that the batter finishes cooking at the same time the cookie dough is done, while also sealing in the Oreo layer underneath.
