  • Easy gift. A sweet Chex mix makes the perfect parting gift for any birthday party, holiday, or family gathering.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Oreo Puppy Chow
  • Chex Cereal– Any variety will work for this recipe.
  • Semisweet Chocolate Chips – Simple and I always have them in my pantry
  • White Chocolate Chips – I like to use a name brand like Ghirardelli for my white chocolate chips. I find they melt easier.
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Oreo Cookies – I use standard Oreo cookies but feel free to use your favorite flavor or double-stuffed if you prefer. You’ll need 12 cookies for coating the Chex cereal and 12 cookies to be chopped and added to the mix later.

See the recipe card for exact quantities.

Step 1: Divide Chex cereal evenly into (2) one-gallon ziploc bags.

Step 2: Crush Oreos into fine crumbs by blending in a food processor for about 30 seconds or by placing the cookies into a resealable plastic bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.

Enjoy!

Recipe Notes: White chocolate chips can be finicky when melting, so I prefer to melt chips in a heatproof bowl set over steaming water to melt them gently. For semisweet chocolate chips, I just melt them in the microwave.

Substitutions

  • Gluten Free: Use corn or rice Chex cereal and gluten-free Oreo cookies to make a gluten free Cookies and Cream Puppy Chow.
  • Ziploc Bags: If you don’t have resealable bags, you can always use large mixing bowls topped with plastic wrap or lidded tupperware to shake up your muddy buddies.

Different Versions

  • Double Chocolate: Use all semisweet chocolate instead of white chocolate chips
  • Switch Up The Chocolate: Use milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips in the place of semisweet if you prefer.
  • Add in candy- To make this sweet snack even sweeter, mix in cookies and cream chocolate pieces, mini marshmallows, or fudge covered Oreos.
  • Play around with the Oreos– There are so many different variations of chocolate sandwich cookies, use your favorite flavor or any leftover Oreos you have in the pantry.

Storage

Store the Muddy Buddies in an airtight container or sealable bag at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks. These Oreo muddy buddies are also delicious when chilled, so if you’re like me, keep them in the fridge to make them extra delicious.

Top Tip

Melt the chocolate chips slowly. Whether you’re using the microwave or the double boiler method, melt the chips slowly (especially the white chocolate) so that they don’t seize up and burn.

FAQs

The Traditional version of muddy buddies are made with chex cereal, melted chocolate and peanut butter, and then tossed in powdered sugar. These Oreo Muddy Buddies are made from Chex cereal, melted white chocolate chips, semisweet chocolate, Oreo crumbs, and powdered sugar.

The name changes depending on who you ask, but Puppy Chow and classic Muddy Buddies are the same thing!
