How To Make Air Fryer French Toast Sticks

Perfect French Toast Sticks Made In The Air Fryer

Makes 12-15 French Toast Sticks

Ingredients you’ll need for the French Toast:

  • 4-5 slices of thick cut brioche style bread or hearty white bread
  • 1 egg + 1 yolk
  • 1/2 cup of half and half
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon of fresh orange zest
  • 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

Cut your bread into sticks by cutting the slices lengthwise into three pieces. Repeat until you have about 12-15 long breadsticks. Set aside.

Cut the brioche slices lengthwise, into three sticks

In a 2 cup measuring cup or bowl, combine the eggs, half and half, sugar, vanilla, orange zest, cinnamon, and salt. Give the mixture a whisk with a fork or small whisk until thoroughly combined.

Slowly drizzle the melted butter into the egg and half and half mixture, whisking the entire time. This will help prevent big lumps from forming once the melted butter hits the cold egg mixture.

Once the custard is thoroughly combined, pour it into a shallow pie plate.

At this point, you want to set your air fryer to 360º and preheat for 5 minutes. After preheating, spray the basket with cooking spray.

Working with one stick at a time, quickly dip one side of the bread into the custard and then flip to coat the other side.

Quickly dip the bread sticks into the custard mixture

Use a fork to lift the bread out of the egg mixture and drain off any excess liquid. Immediately add the French toast stick to the air fryer basket.

Repeat this process until your fry basket has a single layer of custard dipped breadsticks. You may need to do this in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.

Air fry the French toast at 360º for 8-10 minutes, flipping after 5 minutes. The sticks are done when the exteriors are golden brown, feel crisp to the touch, and the middle of each stick is not soggy.

Repeat the dipping and frying process until all the French toast sticks are cooked through.

Transfer to a plate and serve with warm maple syrup.

How Long To Cook French Toast Sticks in an Air Fryer

Cooking French toast in the air fryer will largely depend on personal preference. I personally like a crisp outside and middle that is not soggy. So cooking the sticks at 360º for 8-10 minutes is perfect for achieving that.

However, my husband likes a crisp outside and a softer, soggier middle. To achieve that, you can underbake your toast by a couple of minutes, or air fry at a higher heat like 390º for 6-8 minutes, or until brown and crispy on the outside.

Reheating French Toast Sticks in the Air Fryer

Leftover French toast sticks can easily be reheated the next day in the air fryer!

To reheat, pop the number of sticks you want that morning into your air fryer (I didn’t spray or preheat my air fryer this time) and heat at 360º for about 3-4 minutes until warmed through. Serve and enjoy!

Can these French Toast sticks be frozen?

These French toast sticks freeze beautifully and are easily reheated in the air fryer!

Make the recipe as stated above, allow them to cool completely, and store in a freezer safe container or bag. The French toast sticks can stay frozen for months, as long as their container is air tight!

When you’re ready to eat, pop your frozen French toast sticks into the air fryer (I didn’t preheat or spray my air fryer basket) and cook at 360º for 4 minutes or until warmed through.

Bread to use for French Toast

For French toast, I prefer an enriched dough like a brioche, or a Challah, or even Hawaiian bread.

I also like to choose a bread that is either thick sliced or something that I can slice myself into thick pieces. For this recipe, I used store bought, pre-sliced “Brioche style” bread.

But honestly, my mom always made her French toast using regular sandwich bread or Italian bread growing up, so that’s totally fine to use if that’s what you have on hand!

Serving your french toast sticks

Pile up your freshly fried French toast sticks onto a platter with a dish of warm maple syrup, fresh berries, and maybe a dollop of whipped cream. A sprinkling of powdered sugar wouldn’t hurt either.

As an alternative to syrup, you could serve these French toast sticks with sweetened cream cheese and some jam. That would be delightful on a brunch table!

Tips for making perfectly cooked air fryer french toast sticks

This recipe is pretty straightforward without a ton of steps, but I did learn a couple things during recipe testing that will make this dish failproof!

  • Slowly whisk the melted butter into the eggs and half and half. Adding the warm butter all at once to the cold cream will make the butter clump instantly. By whisking it in slowly, the butter will distribute throughout the custard evenly, and coat the outside of the French toast better.
  • Don’t soak the bread too long. When you’re dipping your sticks, all you want to do is a quickly coat the bread in the custard. The bread soaks up the liquid pretty fast and it’ll lead to soggy French toast sticks if it sits in the egg mixture too long.
  • Do not over crowd the fryer. Giving the sticks some space in between each other will allow for all sides to get beautifully crisp and cooked thoroughly–and quicker!
  • Spray the fry basket with cooking spray. The egg mixture can get a little sticky during the flipping process, so spraying the basket helps to flip the sticks easily
  • Flip your French toast sticks. This really helps to cook the sticks more evenly and aids in uniform crispness.
