You’ll love this recipe for a couple of reasons–the first being that it’s so easy to make!

Basically, you’re gathering a medley of wonderfully fragrant herbs and spices and blending them together to create a great all purpose Mexican inspired seasoning mix.

This brings me to the second reason why I love this spice blend–it really is all purpose.

Honest.

You can use it as a taco seasoning, a fajita seasoning, a blackening spice, or a seasoning for enchiladas. But it doesn’t stop there– add it to roasted veggies, salad dressing (like ranch), or a baked potato. It’s great on everything!

Finally, when you need a meal fast, this seasoning mix will make anything you sprinkle it on delicious. Guaranteed.

Just throw a few tablespoons of this spice mix on the protein of your choice, cook it through, and you’ll have yourself a bold and spicy entree ready in minutes! You’ll barely have to lift a finger!

Why Make Your Own Seasoning Mix?

A blend of smokey spices for delicious Mexican dishes

I love having a premade seasoning mix on hand. It takes so much thinking and guesswork out of cooking and I’m guaranteed to have a tasty dish when it’s done.

I also believe that once you have these fun little “assists” in the kitchen, you’ll feel so much more motivated to make something from scratch that maybe you were a little intimidated to try before.

But aside from just being fun to make, making your own DIY spice blends gives you so much more control in what you’re putting into your food.

Those premade seasoning packets from the grocery store are L O A D E D with sodium. I mean, that’s why they’re so tasty–but not so great on the body.

So by making your own seasonings, you can control the salt in a dish to suit your taste, while cutting out the additional preservatives at the same time.

Let me be clear, I don’t make ALL my seasoning blends from scratch –I still love my store bought seasoning mixes and will use them when the time calls for it (I’ll always be ride or die for my McCormick Chili Seasoning).

BUT if I can make a seasoning blend that I really love, that’s better than store bought (like this Mexican seasoning mix), I’m going to do it!

Another benefit of making your own blend is controlling what flavors go into the mix. If there is a particular herb or spice you love or maybe not love as much, you can adjust the quantities to suit your taste!

And finally, making your own spice mixes or blends will save money, time at the grocery store, and consuming unnecessary sodium and preservatives. Plus it’s a fun and easy activity the kids can help with!

Here’s how we make it:

How to make all purpose Mexican Spice Blend

The spices you'll need for your Mexican Spice Blend: Cumin, Chili Powder, Paprika, Garlic Powder, Coriander, Oregano, Onion, Salt and Pepper

Makes 2 oz of spice mix, or about 6 tablespoons

Ingredients you’ll need for the spice blend:

  • 1 tablespoon ground Cumin
  • 1 tablespoon Chili Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Onion Powder or Dehydrated Onion
  • 1 tablespoon smoked Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried Oregano flakes
  • 1 teaspoon ground Coriander
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ -½ teaspoon cayenne pepper(to your liking)

In a jar or container, add all the spices.

Put the lid on and give a good shake.

Add to your favorite Mexican dishes or sprinkle on roasted veggies for a little kick!

There’s not a ton of salt in this Mexican spice blend, so make sure to taste whatver your making and adjust the salt and pepper to your liking!

How long will this spice mix last?

This all purpose Mexican spice blend will last a long time stored in an airtight container in the cupboard.

There are no ingredients that will go bad, but the thing to keep in mind is that the potency of the spices will fade over time.

If you are grinding your own spices, be aware that caking or clumping may also occur the longer it sits.

Once prepared, use your seasoning mix within a couple of weeks to a month after making it.

You can also store this seasoning mix in the fridge or freezer to keep it fresher for longer!

The real question is “what can’t you use this mix for”?

Well, it can’t change a tire. But here are some practical uses for your delicious DIY spice blend:

  • It’s a great taco seasoning! Add 3 tablespoons of your Mexican spice blend to 16 oz of your favorite ground, shredded, or plant based protein for a super delicious filling
  • Season fish fillets to make fish tacos or to make a nice and spicy fish entree to serve alongside some rice
  • Use this Mexican spice blend to jazz up ordinary brown or white rice
  • Stir into some black beans or homemade refried beans for a little extra kick
  • Sprinkle on a baked potato and add some sour cream, jalapenos, and cheese
  • Use it to season chicken breast or steak strips for fajitas
  • Stir into some tomato sauce with a little bit of flour for a quick enchilada sauce
  • This is a great seasoning for roasted veggies
  • Add to burger meat or mayo to make Mexican inspired burgers. Make sure to top your burgers with pepper jack cheese and guacamole!
