What is Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Pumpkin Pie Spice is a blend of spices typically considered warm and cozy. All pumpkin spice blends will have cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Some will have ginger and some will have allspice, and even some black pepper for a little kick. There is no pumpkin in pumpkin pie spice, but it’s made to complement and flavor sweet pumpkin recipes like pies, cheesecake, and cold foams.

Ingredients for Homemade Pumpkin Spice

This recipe calls for a combination of flavorful spices. To make sure you’re getting the best results, make sure your spices are fresh and in-date. You can use pre-ground spices or grind your own fresh, except for the ginger.

More Tips & Tricks for Making this Pumpkin Pie Seasoning Recipe

I’ve been making this recipe for a while now! Follow my tested tips and tricks for the best results.

  • When purchasing spices, try to get ones with the farthest best by date from your date of purchase.
  • For everything but the ginger, you can grind fresh, whole spices or use fresh pre-ground spices.
  • Avoid storing spices near spots that get too hot. That will lessen the shelf life and make the mix clumpy.
  • Adjust the individual spices to suit your taste! You can also add a small quantity of your favorite spices like black pepper or a bit of mace.
  • You can double or make small batches. If you’re a real pumpkin lover like me, you’ll want to make a big batch of this.

How to use pumpkin pie spice

This recipe can be a 1:1 swap for all recipes calling for pumpkin pie spice. I typically use 2 teaspoons in a pumpkin pie! If you want to use pumpkin pie spice in place of other spices in a recipe (like pumpkin bread or cinnamon rolls), swap the spices with an equal amount of pumpkin pie spice.

What can I use if I don’t have allspice?

If you don’t have allspice, just increase the cinnamon and cloves a dash.

Who created pumpkin spice?

It’s difficult to say who created the first pumpkin spice blend. Variations of pumpkin pie spice have been around for centuries.
The earliest known recipes are a British “mixed spice” recipe that was published in the 1600s and a French “sweet powder spice” or “poudre-douce” recipe from the 1r4th century that is similar to modern pumpkin spice blends. The earliest American recipe for the spice blend was published in 1796

How Much Pumpkin Pie Spice To Use Instead Of Individual Spices

If you just want to use prepared pumpkin spice mix instead of individual spices, follow this simple method. I add up all the spices in the recipe and swap them with pumpkin pie spice.

For instance, my Classic Pumpkin Pie Recipe calls for:

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves,

Those amounts added together = 2 teaspoons, so I would sub in 2 teaspoons of pumpkin spice.
