What better way to tell someone how much they mean to you than by giving them one of these homemade Valentine Rice Krispie Treats?

Well if there is a better way, it would take way more work than these guys do, so I think you better stick to these decadent Rice Krispie Treats for now.

They’re super cute, super easy to make, and I love how they look like little Valentine cards!

For this recipe, we actually color our own white chocolate a light pink to give these treats the ultimate Valentine’s Day vibe. Did you know that you could color your own chocolate?! I sure didn’t until this recipe!

The great thing about this technique is that you can avoid using candy melts if you don’t like the taste! It’s super easy to do and it really allows for so many fun opportunities down the road.

How to Make Valentine Rice Krispie Treats

Makes 12 Rice Krispie Treats

Ingredients:

Instructions:

To make the Rice Krispie Treats:

Spray a 13″x9″ baking dish with cooking spray and line with parchment paper by making a sling over the sides. Spray the parchment too.

Preparing the pan for Valentine Rice Krispie Treats

In a 2 quart or larger saucepan, melt the butter and the marshmallows over medium to medium high heat. Stir constantly until the mixture is melted and smooth.

Immediately pour the marshmallow mixture over your Rice Krispies and stir. Continue to stir the mix until everything is well combined and the cereal is thoroughly coated and sticky.

Spoon the marshmallow cereal mixture into the prepared pan.

Using a piece of plastic wrap, press into the pan to make an even and compact layer.

Cover tightly with plastic wrap and allow to sit for a couple hours or overnight until the mixture is cool and set.

Once the Rice Krispie Treats are set, use the parchment paper sling to remove from the baking dish.

Trim the edges of the treats into a neat rectangle with straight sides. Cut into 12 bars and set aside.

Melting and Coloring your white chocolate:

To melt the white chocolate chips, set a heat proof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water.

Pour the chips into the bowl and slowly melt and stir until smooth.

Remove the bowl from the heat.

This is optional, but if you’re coloring your chocolate: mash together 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil (not melted) and a smear of pink gel food coloring in a small dish.

To color the chocolate, add the food coloring little by little to the melted white chocolate until you get the desired shade you’re looking for.

Decorating The Rice Krispie Treats:

Now let’s transform these Rice Krispie Treats into Valentine Rice Krispie Treats!

Take one of the treat bars and dip it into the white chocolate. Only come halfway up the bar. Feel free to use a spoon to help create an even line and get the bottom half of the Rice Krispie Treat evenly coated.

How to make Valentine's Day Rice Krispie Treats

Shake off the excess and set down on a piece of parchment or wax paper.

Unwrap and press a chocolate heart into the center of the Rice Krispie Treat. Make sure that half of the heart is in the chocolate and the other half is on the naked treat.

Add a little melted chocolate to the back of the heart if it’s not sticking well.

Lastly, sprinkle the white chocolate with Valentine sprinkles.

Repeat until all the treats are dipped and decorated.

You can chill the treats for 30 minutes or allow them to sit at room temp until set. Once set, package up in little cellophane bags and give them to your special someone–even if that someone is you! You deserve it!

Coloring your white chocolate

Rice Krispie Treats dipped in pink candy coating and decorated with sprinkles and a chocolate heart.

I love the idea of light pink when it comes to Valentine’s Day. But we all know that white chocolate doesn’t come in pink.

I don’t really love the flavor of colored candy melts, so my only options were to leave the melted chocolate white or figure out how to color white chocolate chips.

The biggest obstacle here is that you can’t add gel food coloring directly to melted white chocolate or white chocolate chips. It’ll seize and get really yucky.

However, my friend Liz at owlbbaking.com is a genius and came up with this method to mix coconut oil and food coloring together to safely color white chocolate.

I tried it and I’m happy to report that it works perfectly!

For this recipe, I put 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil (not melted) in a small dish and then mashed in a little of my gel food coloring. As far as how much food coloring I used, I just dipped the tip of a butter knife in my food coloring and mixed it with the coconut oil. A little goes a long way.

Make sure to mix the coconut oil and food coloring together BEFORE adding to your melted white chocolate. This step is important! It ensures a nice texture and color.

Add the coconut oil coloring to the melted white chocolate a little at a time to get the shade you desire. You can always mix more coconut oil and coloring together if you need a darker shade, but start small.

You could totally use pink candy melts for this recipe in a pinch, but I personally don’t love the taste (on a side note, I do love Ghirardelli White Melting Wafers. Those do taste like white chocolate and you can color them the same way you would white chocolate chips).

Storing Your Valentine Rice Krispie Treats

Once your treats have set, you can store them at room temperature in an airtight container.

These will keep for several days as long as no air gets to them!

I would not refrigerate or freeze these–they’re best kept at room temperature.

Tips for Valentine Rice Krispie Treats

Valentines Day Rice Krispie Treats
  • Make sure the Rice Krispie Treats are completely cooled and set before dipping. You don’t want chunks of cereal falling in the chocolate, and they’re way easier to slice when fully cooled! I actually let my treats set up overnight (wrapped tightly in plastic).
  • Trim off the edges of the treats before cutting into individual bars–this makes for much neater and more even sized treats. You can use a chef’s knife or serrated knife for this.
  • If coloring your chocolate, to ensure you get the best color and texture, make sure to add the coconut oil and gel food coloring mixture AFTER you melt the chocolate.
  • When adding your food coloring and coconut oil to the chocolate mixture, add just a little at a time to make sure you get the right shade of color you want. You can always add more if needed!
  • Always store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for freshness and the best texture.
