How to make Halloween Rice Krispie Treats with M&Ms

Step 1: Make Homemade Rice Krispie Treats
Prepare a 9″ x 9″ baking pan by lining it with parchment paper. Allow some of the parchment to hang over the sides of the pan, making a sling. Spray the parchment and pan with cooking spray.
Open the bag of M&Ms and measure out 2 tablespoons of candies. Set aside in a separate dish.
In a large bowl, add the Rice Krispies cereal. Set this aside too.
In a 2 quart saucepan, melt the butter and the marshmallows over medium low heat. Stir constantly until all the ingredients are melted completely and smooth.
Once melted, turn off the burner, and immediately pour the marshmallow mixture over the cereal.
Using a rubber spatula, quickly stir the marshmallow mixture into the cereal until completely coated.
Tip
Spray your rubber spatula with cooking spray. This reduces sticking while combining the cereal and marshmallow mix.
Add all but the reserved 2 tablespoons of M&Ms to the marshmallow cereal mixture and quickly give a final stir until the candy is well distributed.

Dump the mixture into your prepared baking dish. Press the cereal mixture into the dish evenly and compact. You can do this cleanly by spraying a piece of plastic wrap with cooking spray and setting it over the Rice Krispies mixture while you’re pressing.
Once the mixture has been pressed into the pan, sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons of M&Ms over the top and press into the treats to adhere.

Allow the Rice Krispie treats to sit for 2 hours to set up.
Step 2: Decorate!
Once the treats are completely set, remove them from the pan using the parchment paper sling. Discard the parchment and trim the edges of the Rice Krispie Treats to make an even square and then cut into twelve portions.
In a microwave safe bowl (or in a heatproof bowl set over barely simmering water), melt the white chocolate in the microwave.
Using a piping bag or a spoon, drizzle the melted chocolate over each of the treats. Decorate with Halloween themed sprinkles and enjoy once the white candy/chocolate drizzle has set completely!
Pro Tip:
Use Fresh M&Ms to cover up the squished ones. Once you press the Rice Krispie mixture into the pan, you’ll no doubt have some squashed M&Ms showing at the top of the treats. The 2 tablespoons of M&Ms you save for the very end can be used to cover the squashed candies.
Storing Your Treats
Once the treats are set and decorated, you can store them at room temperature inside of an airtight container.
These will keep for several days as long as no air gets to them. They’re perfect to make ahead for a party!
I would advise against refrigerating or freezing Rice Krispie Treats–they’re best kept fresh at room temperature.
Keeping Your Halloween Rice Krispie Treats from Getting Hard:
Below I’ll share with you my top tips for keeping your Rice Krispie treats soft and chewy and perfect every time!
- Make sure you have enough marshmallow goo! I’ve made the original recipe off the cereal box and honestly, there’s not enough marshmallows for me. BUT the bag of mini marshmallows calls for a whopping 5 1/2 cups of marshmallows for their treats, and that was the perfect amount.
- Add extra butter to the marshmallow mix. I add more butter than the original recipe states. The extra fat and water from the butter will keep the Rice Krispie Treats from drying out too quickly.
- Use a smaller baking pan. I like my treats on the thick side, so I usually use an 8″ x 8″ or 9″ x 9″ pan. Not only do I get to stuff more Rice Krispies and marshmallows into my face, but using a smaller pan reduces the amount of surface area exposed to air and locks in more moisture.
- Wrap and store the treats really, really well. Keep the treats in a super airtight container, zip bag, or wrapped really well in plastic wrap at room temp. Anything you can do to keep the air out will be your best chance for keeping these treats soft, chewy, and delicious.
Variations:

M&Ms in these Rice Krispie Squares are great for the instant Halloween effect (and simplicity), but you can definitely play around with the ingredients to make these as spooky as you’d like!
Here are some other wickedly fun ideas:
- Add candy corn to the mixture. Chill the candy in the freezer or fridge before mixing into the cereal and marshmallow mixture.
- Change up the sprinkles to make a mummy, monster, ghost, or witch themed treat.
- If you’re feeling ambitious, decorate your treats like a graveyard. Find the instructions here.
- Use a variety of colored candy melts or color your own chocolate for an extra addition of Halloween spunk. Orange, green, or purple would look great on these treats!
- Make these treats in a 13″ x 9″ pan and cut them into fun Halloween shapes like a pumpkin, ghost, or gravestone once they’re set! Drizzle with Halloween colored candy melts or chocolate chips and top with sprinkles!
- Pipe on black frosting to create faces, or hair, or any other ghoulish design on your square!
You’re only limited by your creativity and whatever you end up with will be ghoulishly festive and most of all DELICIOUS!
Dipped Rice Krispie Treats
You can dip your Rice Krispie Treats in different colored candy melts and decorate them with sprinkles, Halloween candy, and spooky decorations! I do this with pretzel rods for my cute Halloween Pretzels.
Tips For The Best Rice Krispie Treats (Halloween Edition)
- Prep that baking dish! The marshmallow mixture is super sticky, so making sure the baking dish is lined with parchment paper and well greased will set you up for success.
- Work fast when you’re mixing the marshmallow goo into the cereal! That stuff starts to set quickly and can just cement itself to the bottom of your mixing bowl before it gets to the pan.
- Make sure to add the M&Ms once the Rice Krispies are mixed into the marshmallow mixture. The marshmallow and butter is very warm once it hits the cereal–and stays warm. By adding the M&Ms too soon, you run the risk of melting them and running the colors all over the treats. Doesn’t look good. Stirring them in at the last possible second keeps the colors from running.
- Use a sheet of plastic wrap to help press the Rice Krispie mixture into the pan. It’ll keep your hands clean!
