I’m a Maine girl through and through, and if there’s one sandwich that me and everyone in New England knows, it’s the Fluffernutter.

Here in Maine, marshmallow fluff is an essential ingredient in our pantries. It’s used in making fudge, whoopie pie fillings, and of course the classic fluffernutter sandwich we all grew up eating.

This simple peanut butter and fluff combo is one of those nostalgic New England lunches that never really goes out of style. I’ve eaten more of these than I can count over the years, and I’ve picked up a few little tricks that make them extra good without turning into a sticky mess.

Why You’ll Love This Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Sandwich

  • With just three ingredients and 3 minutes, you can have a super special sandwich that the kids can’t resist.
  • These sandwiches are versatile. Swap out the peanut butter for nut butter or sun butter to meet your family’s needs.
  • Fluffernutters are way more fun than a typical peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
  • This is such a fun surprise to sneak in the lunch box. It’s a perfect lunchtime treat the kids will LOVE.
  • If you’re from New England like me, then this classic recipe will bring you right back to your childhood.

Fluffernutter Ingredients

A jar of marshmallow fluff, a jar of peanut butter, a knife, and six slices of bread are laid out on parchment paper on a wooden surface.
  • Soft Sandwich Bread– White bread is the classic bread for a fluffernutter and the softer the better. My mom always made these on thin whole wheat bread, but after testing this recipe a few times, I prefer a thick sliced white bread to hold up to the stickiness of the fluff.
  • Peanut Butter – Creamy peanut butter or chunky works well. The white bread and marshmallow fluff add up to a sweet sandwich, so the salty peanut butter will help balance that out.
  • Marshmallow Fluff – The traditional fluffernutter sandwich uses “Fluff“. You can use marshmallow creme if you can’t find fluff, but if you want a classic New England fluffernutter, use marshmallow Fluff.

How To Make A Fluffernutter

If you can make a peanut butter and jelly, you can make a fluffernutter! This fluffernutter recipe is the perfect way to jazz up simple peanut butter sandwiches.

Step 1:

Two slices of white bread on parchment paper; one has peanut butter, the other has marshmallow fluff. A jar of marshmallow fluff and a knife are nearby.

Lay out your pieces of bread and gather the Fluff and peanut butter.

Step 2:

Slices of bread on a surface, one topped with white marshmallow spread and the other with smooth peanut butter, alongside extra bread and a jar of spread.

Spread one slice of bread with peanut butter and then spread the second slice with marshmallow fluff.

Step 3:

A sandwich on a white plate contains layers of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter between slices of white bread.

Press the two sandwich halves together and cut them in half. Enjoy immediately or wrap up and pack in a lunchbox for later!

Top Tips For The Best Fluffernutter Sandwich:

  • Don’t add too much peanut butter. I love peanut butter, but it can overwhelm the marshmallow flavor.
  • After testing these several times, I noticed the fluff starts to spread toward the edges of the sandwich as it sits. If you’re packing one in a lunchbox, keep the halves together to help prevent a mess, or skip cutting the sandwich in half altogether.

Substitutions:

  • Nut butter or sun butter can be swapped for peanut butter.
  • Swap white bread for gluten-free bread, wheat bread, multigrain bread, or any sandwich bread you have on hand.
  • If you can’t find Fluff brand marshmallow fluff, you can swap in Jet Puffed Marshmallow Creme. The marshmallow creme just has more stabilizers than traditional fluff.

Variations:

The sky is the limit for this fun and simple sandwich. Adjust the quantity of peanut butter flavor, marshmallow or add fun mix-ins like the ones below:

  • Switch out the peanut butter for Nutella for a chocolatey marshmallow treat.
  • Add sliced fruit like bananas or strawberries to the peanut butter layer for extra sweetness and nutrients.
  • Use a sandwich cutter to make homemade uncrustables with peanut butter and fluff. These are great to make in advance and take on family adventures without all the mess!
  • Drizzle the Fluff side of the bread with strawberry jam or mixed berry jam for a fluffernutter and PB&J mash-up!
  • You can swap traditional Marshmallow Fluff for strawberry flavored Fluff for extra deliciousness.
Four slices of bread on a surface: top left has peanut butter and banana slices, top right has chocolate spread, bottom left has fluff spread, and bottom right has fluff spread. A knife lies above.

Grilled Fluffernutter Sandwich

Let’s be honest, it gets cold here in Maine, and sometimes you want your sandwich toasted. If you’ve never tried a grilled fluffernutter, I highly recommend it. The bread turns golden and crisp while the peanut butter and fluff melt into a warm, gooey center. It’s one of those cozy little treats that feels extra special, especially as a late-night snack.

A sandwich with toasted bread, one half spread with marshmallow fluff, peanut butter, and Nutella, rests on parchment paper on a wooden surface.

Make the sandwich as instructed above. Butter both sides of the bread and place the sandwich in a hot skillet over medium-high or medium heat (depending on your stovetop).

Grill the sandwich for 2 minutes on one side, then flip and toast the second side for 1 minute until golden brown and melty. Cut in half and enjoy!

Fluffernutter Sandwich Storage:

These sandwiches are best stored tightly wrapped in plastic (the marshmallow does ooze out the cut sides) in a lunch box or at room temperature for up to eight hours.

If you’re meal prepping for the week, I recommend wrapping any uneaten sandwiches tightly in the fridge. Before eating, let your sandwich come up to room temperature.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your Marshmallow Fluff sandwich alongside some kettle cooked potato chips and veggies. For something more substantial, try it with my air fryer french fries!

FAQs

What is a Fluffernutter sandwich made of?

Traditional fluffernutters are simple sandwiches that have peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff in between two slices of white bread.

Is there a difference between Marshmallow Fluff and marshmallow cream?

A slight difference. Traditional Marshmallow Fluff is made with corn syrup, egg whites, sugar, and vanillin. The Jet-Puffed brand Marshmallow Crème is made with less than 2% egg whites, and includes added flavorings and stabilizers. If you want a true Maine fluffernutter (the fluffernutter I grew up with), use Fluff brand marshmallow fluff.

Do you toast a fluffernutter?

You don’t have to! New Englanders usually just spread Fluff and peanut butter on soft white bread. But feel free to toast the bread first or see above for a grilled fluffernutter sandwich method.

Are melted marshmallows the same as Marshmallow Fluff?

No. Marshmallows have gelatin in them, and Fluff and marshmallow creme do not.
